Republicans of 38th District to hold supper, straw poll

Republican voters in the 38th District will have a chance to talk with Delaware State Republican Party candidates at their 2nd Annual Covered Dish Supper and Straw Poll on Saturday, April 13, at 5 the Roxana Fire Hall.

Delaware State Auditor R. Thomas Wagner Jr. will be the guest speaker, and Delaware and Sussex County Republican elected officials and party officers will also be there to mingle and answer questions. The evening will culminate in “Straw Poll” voting by attendees — using real straws.

Tickets for the event cost $12 each (free for those younger than 18) and may be purchased: online at or at the 38th District Republican tent at Hocker’s Supercenter on Saturdays, April 6 and 13, (unless sold out) from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., or by calling Rob Arlett at (302) 462-5746 or emailing

Guests are being asked to bring their choice of a covered dish to serve six to eight people — either an entrée or vegetable or salad or dessert.

“The 2nd Annual Covered Dish Supper and Straw Poll is a grassroots chance to participate in our political process. You can bring some food to share, enjoy great company and music, meet elected Republican officials and make your voices heard by talking to the candidates and then drop your straw in the ballot boxes,” said Ron Gray, 38th District representative. “Everyone will have a great time and leave better informed,” Gray added.”

“In past years, many Sussex County Republicans said their voices weren’t heard by the State Party prior to the convention. Last year we changed that for the 38th District by holding our 1st Annual Covered Dish Supper & Straw Poll. It was so much fun that we are doing it again this year!” said state Sen. Gerald Hocker.

“The Covered Dish Supper and Straw Poll is a chance for 38th District Republicans to vote in a non-binding straw poll for their choices of who will guide the party for the next two years. The 10 delegates and six alternate delegates from the 38th District to the Republican State Convention on Saturday, April 27, in Wilmington will then have the outcome to take to the Convention.”

Both Gray and Hocker will be there said they will be taking the 38th District opinions to the Republican Party on April 27.

“Sussex County voters have always known their elected and party officials personally, and candidates in Delaware have always been eager to personally meet the voters,” explained Gray. “Our American system works best when the people have regular contact with their legislators, elected officials and party leaders.”

The Roxana Fire Hall, at 35943 Zion Church Rd., Frankford, DE 19945, is located on Route 20, .9 miles south of Route 17.
