Bethany becoming a Weekend Wonderland this December

Building on last year’s successful debut, Bethany Beach will again celebrate the holidays each Saturday in December with Weekend Wonderland, which will feature special shopping hours, and festive activities including caroling around the town’s boardwalk holiday tree, free gift-wrapping, a holiday movie, crafts for children and a chance to meet characters from the Disney movie “Frozen.”

The holiday activities are a collaboration between the Town of Bethany Beach, the Bethany-Fenwick Area Chamber of Commerce and participating merchants.

Bethany Beach’s holiday festivities kick off Saturday, Dec. 3, with the town-sponsored Holiday Happenings celebration. From 1 to 3 p.m., families are being invited to gather at town hall, 214 Garfield Parkway, to greet Santa, enjoy refreshments and participate in face-painting and other activities. Rides through town will be available on a trolley, horse wagon or tractor from 1 to 4 p.m.

After that, visitors can wander up the boardwalk to Tidepool Toys & Games for “Mingle & Jingle,” a chance to meet Elsa and Anna, the sisters featured in the movie “Frozen,” from 3 to 4:30 p.m.

Bethany Blues will host “Wrappy Hour” from 3 to 5 p.m., offering free gift-wrapping. At 5 p.m., people can gather ’round the holiday tree by the bandstand as it is lighted for the first time this season, and enjoy caroling and cocoa (compliments of Holiday Inn Express), in addition to a special holiday concert featuring Jesse Garron’s Tribute to Elvis.

All attending are being are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items and clothing for neighbors in need, which will be collected at that time.

Beginning Dec. 3 and continuing on Dec. 10 and Dec. 17, participating stores in downtown Bethany Beach will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors on Dec. 3, though, can vote for their favorite holiday decorations among the town’s businesses. Red mittens for voting can be picked up at town hall, Tidepool Toys & Games on the boardwalk, Bethany Blues and Bethany Beach Ocean Suites hotel from 1 to 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 3, with winners to be announced at the tree-lighting.

On Saturday, Dec. 10, the holiday fun continues with Cookies with Santa at 99 Sea Level on the boardwalk at Hollywood Street from 1 to 3 p.m. From 3 to 5 p.m., Bethany Beach Books on Garfield Parkway will host Kids’ Craft Corner, sponsored by Delaware Read Aloud. Bethany Blues will again offer free gift-wrapping during “Wrappy Hour” from 3 to 5 p.m. Caroling & Cocoa will commence at 5 p.m. on the boardwalk, with a special performance by the Selbyville Middle School Choir. Non-perishable food, as well as clothing items, will be collected for the Holiday Helping Hearts Food Drive.

The final Weekend Wonderland festivities will be held on Saturday, Dec. 17, when people can stop by 99 Sea Level for Cookies with Santa from 1 to 3 p.m. At 3 p.m., the family Christmas movie “Elf” will be shown, free of charge, at the Bethany Beach Ocean Suites hotel. Popcorn and juice will be provided. At the same time, free gift-wrapping will be offered during “Wrappy Hour” at Bethany Blues.

At 5 p.m., shoppers have another opportunity to gather around the boardwalk holiday tree with family, friends and neighbors for caroling and cocoa. The Southern Delaware School of the Arts’ Show Choir will offer a special concert. And, again, everyone is being encouraged to bring non-perishable food items or warm clothes for those in need.
