Lower Sussex took control early, with Showalter hammering the first of his pair of two-run homers. This one also scored left fielder Castro, who made first after being struck in the head by a Seaford wild pitch.

Leading 2-0, Lower Sussex rallied on with an eight-run second inning highlighted by Forman’s grand slam and a solo homer by Castro.

“It felt good when I hit it,” Castro said of his homerun. “I knew it was going when I hit it.”

They picked up two more runs in the third with catcher Drew Hitchens and first baseman Trent Bennett each slamming RBI singles.

Trailing 15-0, Seaford’s only glory would be two-run fourth and fifth innings.

In the fourth inning, Phillip Wends and Rian Shockley swatted RBI singles. In the fifth, Lower Sussex let Seaford score on a wild pitch and again when Lance Marvel landed one in the warning track.

Seaford fought on, trying to stop the slaughter rule from ending the game after five innings. They were one run away from that goal. With two outs and runners in scoring position on a 0-2 count, Aaron Robinson ended it when he reach out for a pitch and struck out.

“We’ve still got some room for improvement,” said Lower Sussex Coach Derwood Bennett. “The boys played well. We got a strong pitching performance from Matt McDowell and our ace Corey Showalter. We did a great job.”
