All-Stars get bid at nationals

The members of the Southern Delaware All-Stars Cheerleading continue to make a splash in the sport during their first months in existence.

Still in their first handful of competitions, the group of girls ages 11 to 15 took home first place in their division at a competition Saturday, Jan. 29, at Glasgow High School in Newark. Better yet, the performance earned the team a bid at the 2005 National All-Star Cheerleading Championships, set for March 12 through 16 at Walt Disney World in Florida.

According to coach Kristine Johnson, the All-Stars are now working doubly hard to raise funds for team expenses, with an estimated cost for the competition — per cheerleader — of $445, plus airfare. (That’s on top of their initial cost for uniforms and the $5,000 needed to purchase full-size mats for their practices.)

Toward that end, they’ll hold a bake sale Saturday, Feb. 12, at Hocker’s Supercenter at Routes 26 and 17, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

While the funding needs are looming, Johnson said the squad members are focusing on their routines for the upcoming nationals, as well as the other competitions they’ll take part in over the coming weeks.

They’ve set a high bar for themselves. After placing high in their first two competitions — even earning a coach-selected spirit award — the team brought home a third-place trophy for their performance Saturday, Jan. 15, in Elkton, Md.

And while they were snowed-out for their planned Jan. 22 competition, they came back from the unexpected break with the first-place finish Jan. 29.

“We’re very, very, very proud of them,” Johnson said.

Next, the All-Stars will compete in the Dover Spirit Fest, set for Sunday, Feb. 6. Shortly thereafter — if funding needs can be met — the local girls will head to Florida to put themselves up against the best all-star cheerleading squads in the nation.
