Local surfers compete in regional surfing championships

More than 20 area surfers competed in the 2018 Mid-Atlantic Regional Surfing Championships over the weekend, at Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head, N.C. They were joined by competitors from Virginia Beach, North Carolina and South Carolina.

The top surfers from the Mid-Atlantic Regionals qualify to compete in the East Coast Championships — “The Easterns” — to be held in September.

The Delmarva District of the Eastern Surfing Association (ESA) holds five surf contests in Ocean City, Md., and Assateague each summer. With the first contest of the 2018 Summer Surf Series to be held May 26 at 30th Street in Ocean City, the 2018 season is only weeks away.

“Our contests are a great place for surfers of all ages and levels to be introduced to surf competition,” said Laura Deeley Bren, co-director of the Delmarva district. “Delmarva has an incredibly supportive surf community that makes our contests a great place for families to share in the love of the sport.”

The ESA is dedicated to the sport of amateur surfing, to the operation of a program of amateur competition for surfers of all ages and abilities, and to the establishment and preservation of free access to a clean shoreline and ocean environment. Several professional surfers got their start in the Delmarva ESA.
