Believe in Tomorrow 5K to support beach respites for critically ill kids

The 3rd Annual Believe in Tomorrow 5K is just around the corner, scheduled to take place on Thursday, July 19, at 6:30 p.m. in Bethany Beach.

Presented by the Big Chill Beach Club, the Believe in Tomorrow 5K supports critically ill children and their families. Those who run or walk in the event will cover a scenic course that offers beautiful views of the beach and ocean as they pass over the Indian River Inlet Bridge, followed by a sunset post-race party at the Big Chill Beach Club at the inlet.

The Believe in Tomorrow 5K race will raise funds to provide families of critically ill children restorative stays in the Believe in Tomorrow Respite Housing program. The properties for these stays are located at the House in Fenwick Island, Children’s House By the Sea on 66th Street in Ocean City, Md., and the House on the Bay, which is also in Ocean City.

Founded back in 1982, the foundation began as a volunteer effort to help critically ill children while they were undergoing hospital treatments at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center and University of Maryland hospitals.

Then, in 1983, the foundation began to look at addressing the longer-term needs of pediatric cancer and cystic fibrosis patients. They worked to establish one of the very first teen cancer support groups in the country at the Johns Hopkins Hospital.

In 1986, the foundation created its formal program to sponsor support groups for teen cancer at other hospitals. It also created Beach Respite Housing, which was the first pediatric housing program in the U.S. for children with life-threatening illnesses. The program started with just the one oceanfront condo in Ocean City. It was made available to families free of charge throughout their child’s illness, as a means “to renew their spirits during treatment.”

To register for the race, visit the Believe in Tomorrow’s website at Racers can register as an individual or as a team. Pre-registration closes at noon on Tuesday, July 17. Participants will still be able to register at the event, starting at 5:30 p.m. at the entrance of the Big Chill Beach Club. The race director is Races2Run.
