LSLL Majors take state softball championship

The moment was a year in the making.

For the Lower Sussex Little League Major League girls’ softball team, their sole focus after falling just short of their state title run in 2017 was to get back to the championship this season — and, this time, to win it.

Mission accomplished — but, oh, they are not done just yet.

Following Saturday’s more-than-impressive 14-1 shellacking of District 1 champion Camden-Wyoming — which LSLL had defeated 2-0 in their previous game — the LSLL squad has now turned its focus toward the Little League Mid-Atlantic regional tournament in Bristol, Conn.

“We are extremely excited,” manager Sarah Hoban said following her team’s second straight win to sweep the state championship. “The girls have worked really hard and set this as their goal. They are really excited to go represent the state of Delaware.”

The LSLL All-Stars were once again led by Camryn Ehlers in the circle. The righty fired a complete game, with eight strikeouts.

Kinsley Hall had a triple for the winners, while also contributing a pair of RBIs. Shaniya Lewis also chipped in with two RBIs.

LSLL combined for 12 hits, with Hall, Lewis, Ehlers, Lily Hoban and Jaya Shaub each having multiple-hit efforts.

“Cam just continues to do her thing,” Hoban added. “We have played great defense, making plays behind her and, offensively, the girls are doing their job scoring runs with timely hits.

“They are smiling, having fun, and, hopefully, it can continue.”

And making up for what they felt was a disappointing end to last season is the icing on the cake.

“We left last year thinking that we could have done better,” Hoban assessed. “The girls have been really motivated and are excited for the next step in this process. We are taking things one game at a time and worrying about playing our game. We don’t worry about anybody else. We know that if we play the way that we are capable of playing, we will be just fine.”

The girls will be leaving early Friday morning for the Mid-Atlantic tournament. Fundraising efforts are under way to help defray their postseason expenses. With Lower Sussex Little League being a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, all donations are tax-deductible. Donations can be mailed to LSLL, ℅ Major Girls Softball, P.O. Box 372, Ocean View, DE, 19970.

Their first game in the Mid-Atlantics will be against Maryland on Saturday, July 21, at 1 p.m. Supporters can follow all the action on the ESPN+ App on smartphones or tablets.
