CATS to raise funds with Oct. 19 bake sale
The Cats Around Town Society (CATS), an Ocean View-based 501(c) charity, is honoring Global Cat Day — Oct. 16 — by holding a fundraising bake sale Friday, Oct. 19, from 9 to 3 p.m. at Giant Foods in Millville and Hocker’s in Clarksville.
All funds raised will be used to sterilize and vaccinate (for rabies) the community’s homeless community cats.
“Community cats are found in every community in Delmarva,” CATS representatives noted. “These cats may have been abandoned when the owners move; they may be lost or they may have been born as a feral whose mother was also born without much human interaction.
CATS’ mission is to reduce the overpopulation of homeless cats by trap/neuter/vaccinate/return (TNVR) program. Cats are trapped, sterilized, vaccinated for rabies and returned back to the location from which they were taken.
“TNVR has been proven to be the most effective method to reduce the cat population,” CATS representatives added. “By returning the cats to their original location, it prevents other cats from moving in to take their place in an area. This is called ‘the vacuum effect,’ and TNVR prevents this.”
CATS is holding its fall bake sale to raise money to obtain sterilization operations at the Brandywine Valley SPCA in Georgetown. Each operation and rabies vaccination costs $53. Those who are not able to attend the bake sale may donate by going to Facebook, under Cats Around Town Society or by mailing donations to CATS, P.O. Box 541, Ocean View, DE 19970.
