Race to support ‘Coach Nic’ Scholarship at Sussex Tech

On Saturday, March 9, Sussex Technical High School will host its inaugural 5K Race for Coach Nic.

The proceeds from the race will support the scholarship created in honor of the school’s former social studies and history teacher, who was also a long-time track and cross-country coach. Lou Nicoletti retired last year, after more than 40 years of service to the students of Sussex Tech. He was the Sussex Technical School District Teacher of the Year in 1995, and over the years was recognized with several Coach of the Year honors as well.

“There is no better way to honor Mr. Nicoletti’s long service and mentorship of our cross-country and track-and-field student-athletes than with a race,” said head track-and-field coach Dontez Collins, who himself was one of Nicoletti’s athletes during his time as a student at Sussex Tech. “We want to show our appreciation and also support one senior athlete with this inaugural scholarship.”

As with any event of this nature, sponsors are being sought for the race, and there are three tiers of sponsorship available: Gold ($300), Silver ($200) and Bronze ($100). For more information on becoming a sponsor, contact Dontez Collins at dontez.collins@sussexvt.k12.de.us.

The race will take place, rain or shine, at 10 a.m. on March 9 and will cover a 3.1-mile (5-kilometer) cross-country course that was designed by Nicoletti. Registration for the event will take place from 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. on the day of the race. Individuals can also pre-register online for $22 at seashorestriders.com. Participants wishing to register on the day of the event will pay $25.

Pre-registered runners are guaranteed an event T-shirt, and awards will be presented to the top overall male/female and master champions. There will also be awards for the top three finishers in eight different age groups, ranging from 13 or older, through 70 or older.
