The River to host Back to School Bash

In anticipation of the first day of classes for local students, The River church is hosting its third annual Back to School Bash.

Planned for 4 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17, at the Wesleyan church near the intersection of Routes 17 and 20 in Roxana, the event is for students of all ages, who will be given basic school supplies at no charge.

“We have a heart for loving our community, and we love bringing the community together and bringing families together. We wanted to do something fun and also something that will help fulfill a need,” said Megan Bunting, director of River Kids, the church’s youth program.

She said hundreds of school supplies, such as pencils, notebooks and glue sticks, provided by the church, will be given away.

Usually, about 200 people attend, she said.

“Kids will get a sack, and they can fill it up with school supplies they need. Four hair stylists from All About You in Bethany Beach will give their time for free haircuts. We’ll have face-painting. The Selbyville library is coming to do library card sign-ups and Anchors Aweigh Entertainment will have outdoor laser tag. The older kids love that,” Bunting said.

Blue Scoop ice cream shop will sell cones for $3 each, and guests will be invited to enjoy hamburgers and hot dogs from the grill.

“We will have water slide, too,” Bunting said, “so bring a towel.”
