Shore Appliance opens location in Ocean View

After years of doing business in the Salisbury, Md., area, Shore Appliance Connection Inc. has opened a second store, on Cedar Neck Road in Ocean View, providing six new jobs for area residents and promising quality service.

Buying from a company that employs knowledgeable professionals and has a service department is wise “because when you have an issue with your product, you can get it serviced,” said Ryan Larmore, sales manager.

“We spend a tremendous amount of time and money making sure our prices are competitive. When you come in and look at a price tag hanging on a unit, you can be sure that price tag is very competitive in the market,” he said.

Shore Appliance has customers in a 40-mile radius from the Salisbury store, reaching into Ocean View, Bethany Beach, Fenwick Island, Lewes, Bridgeville, Greenwood and Ocean City.

Being in Ocean View isn’t much different from being in Salisbury, Larmore said, since they have always had clients at the Delaware beaches.

“It made sense to open a store here. We’ve had the main showroom since 1951 in Salisbury. We do a tremendous business up here through business contacts. Our trucks, our installers, our service techs, were already up here doing business. It was just natural to open up here,” he said.

There are about 150 appliances on display in the showroom and on display in Ocean View, where the showroom is smaller than Salisbury’s 12,000-square-foot display area.

“We compete with Lowe’s, with Home Depot. The biggest thing we do is we help you select the right appliance.

“The biggest majority of people who make an appliance purchase — over 80 percent of them — are dissatisfied with it when they get it home. That is because they are going out, looking at the price tag. They are not getting an education. They are not learning about proper use and benefits of the product, and they end up, honestly, getting the wrong product because no one is there to guide them. And there is so much misinformation on the Internet today,” Larmore said.

“Our inventory level is very low. I believe in letting the customer select the right piece for their needs and purchasing that, rather than having it here,” Larmore said.

Among the most commonly purchased items are washers, dryers and refrigerators, as well as barbecue grills.

“We do everything from sales to service to delivery, installation — you name it. We have dishwashers, ranges; brands with big names, like Whirlpool, GE, Maytag, Kitchen Aid. Those are some that our customers can choose from. Some appliance dealers go out and buy a tractor-trailer load of washers then force their customers to buy those washers,” he said.

Thanks to advanced technology, customers are increasingly buying Wi-Fi connected appliances that allow them control using cellphones or tablets. They can preheat the oven while driving home, or turn on the washer or dryer.

Self-diagnosing appliances send messages to the manufacturer if something is going bad. The manufacturer then contacts the owner of the appliance.

“Some models don’t have it, but manufacturers are pushing it. These appliances know a part failed before you do,” Larmore said.

Currently, the most popular appliance colors are stainless steel, black stainless steel and slate, he added.

In 1998, Ryan Larmore’s father bought the business from Bill Robertson, who had opened it in 1951. The senior Larmore worked for Robertson and is now president of Shore Appliance. His wife, Lynn, is vice president. Another son, Duane, is in charge of operations. There are 26 employees across both stores.
