Historical society speaks out for Lewes

I would like to bring awareness to a wonderful treasure that is ours to enjoy: Lewes, Del. I am grateful to be able to call Lewes my home since 2006, following my great-grandparents who became residents of this charming, historic town before the 1900s.

Shortly after moving to the Delaware coast, I was asked to sit on the board of directors for the Lewes Historical Society, which interested me due to their focus on preserving our history. The Society was officially founded in January 1962 by a group of citizens that were concerned over the lack of action taken to save Lewes’s historic architecture.

Today, the Lewes Historical Society not only has saved and preserved our local historic buildings, they offer workshops, tours, a free monthly speaker series and other dozens of educational opportunities to the public that enrich the community. Many are not aware that there is a free Lewes History Museum that houses a wonderful Children’s Discovery Center!

The Historical Society is a non-profit, volunteer-driven organization. Today, I am the chair of the Board of Trustees of the Lewes Historical Society. It is my responsibility to assist in keeping these wonderful events going. As most know, it’s not easy to find volunteers these days!

On Friday, Sept. 20, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, the Society will host a Volunteer Fair on their campus, located at 110 Shipcarpenter Street in Lewes. My hope is that residents of Sussex County will join LHS’s dedicated staff to learn more about volunteering for their worthwhile programs, tours and events. There will be a free tour of the historic buildings on-site, along with light refreshments. I hope to see new faces and enthusiasm as we continue preserving our history together.

The Lewes Historical Society represents an important part of what Lewes has become and continues to be a viable contributor to the community. Please join me in being involved in the preservation of history, of the first town, in the first state of our wonderful country!
