The Indians River High School girls’ volleyball team made it five wins in a row on Tuesday, Oct. 8, following a 3-0 sweep of visiting Polytech. The win improved the Indians to 9-2 on the season as they prepare for the final stretch of the season.
The Indians posted set scores of 25-5, 25-15 and 25-15 en route to the Henlopen Conference divisional crossover match.
Senior co-captain Jessica Amezcua turned in a solid performance, with seven aces, four digs and four assists. Freshman Camryn Ehlers was once again impressive, with 19 assists and six digs, while junior Raychel Ehlers added 19 kills, six digs, four aces and an assist. Sophomore Lia Diakos chipped in five kills, three digs and a block.
Last Thursday, Oct. 3, the Indians posted a 3-1 win over Lake Forest, wrapping up the match in the fourth set with a dominating 25-14 effort. IR had taken a 2-0 match lead with 25-8 and 25-5 scores in the first and second sets. The Spartans rebounded for a marathon 28-26 win in the third set.
All 12 Indians registered some form of stats in the win over the Panthers. Camryn Ehlers recorded 30 assists to go along with nine aces, while Raychel Ehlers registered 22 kills, two aces, three blocks, and three digs. Amezcua and Johnson also figured into the win, with 14 digs and nine kills, respectively. Macedo added 12 digs.
The Indians will host their arch-rivals, Smyrna, in a Henlopen Conference showdown on Tuesday, Oct. 15, at 5:15 p.m. The Indians have never been able to get over the Smyrna hurdle, having dropped all 12 meetings with the Eagles since the program started.
Boys’ soccer: Indians clip Ravens’ wings
The Indian River boys’ soccer team has posted a 2-0-1 mark in their last three games, following their first loss of the season back on Sept. 24, thanks to a 7-0 win over Lake Forest last week, on Thursday, Oct. 3.
The Indians flexed their proverbial muscle in the lopsided affair featuring two Henlopen Conference South Division foes. Eddie Mochiam got IR on the board just 2:30 into the game, with an assist from Blake Morgan. Jared Cordoba, Kyle Topper, Omar Baker, Alex DiLuzio, Ryan Stone and Willem Lambertson also scored for the Indians.
Josh Bird recorded a pair of assists, while Baker, Mochiam, Jordan Illian and Josh Carter also picked up assists. Bastian Perry was credited with two saves in the shutout win.
The Indians were set to host Delmar on Thursday, Oct. 10, after Coastal Point press time. Results can be found the Coastal Point sports Facebook page.
