Free Lighthouse veterans program will highlight women who serve
At Lighthouse Christian School, one of the major goals is to instill an appreciation for their country and the freedoms available here. With that, they’re inviting the public to the annual Veterans Day Program and luncheon on Friday, Nov. 22, at 1 p.m.
This is a two-hour celebration of U.S. military veterans (and active service members), and recognition of the difficult sacrifices made, whether or not soldiers make it home.
The students present their appreciation for country and freedoms, honor the men and women who have served, including those who paid “the ultimate price” and have passed away. There are also guest speakers and the “Line of Thanksgiving,” in which every single student lines up to shake hands or high-five with every single veteran.
This event is free and open to veterans of all ages (and their families) from all military branches.
The 2019 theme is “Saluting Women.”
“We’re recognizing women in the military,” said organizer Pat Viguie. “This has been long overdue. As I speak to more and more women … they’re just saying nobody has ever done this before. So, I’m so excited that our school is doing this.”
Historically, women have showed their eagerness to serve, despite being excluded from certain ranks, positions and even military academies for much of U.S. history.
And besides the women in uniform, there are countless civilian women working behind the scenes. They run the auxiliaries that support the veterans. They fundraise and ship supplies to soldiers abroad. They’re Gold Star Mothers, sisters and wives whose beloved family members never came home.
“What they do behind the scenes quietly … it’s unbelievable what they do. It’s not just those who wear the uniform,” Viguie said.
Besides honoring the visitors, the program allows is realistic opportunity for children to meet U.S. veterans and “understand that freedom is not free, and people are working,” said Viguie, a school coordinator of curriculum and events.
Afterward, vets and families are invited to a free luncheon buffet, with food donated by area restaurants.
Lighthouse Christian School is located at 28157 Lighthouse Crossing, Dagsboro (near Dagsboro Church of God on Route 113). The deadline to RSVP is Monday, Nov. 18, by calling Pat at (302) 537-5017.
