Bethany turning into a Weekend Wonderland on Saturdays
For the next three Saturdays, Bethany Beach is rolling out the holiday carpet for shoppers, with a schedule of activities and special promotions designed to make the season bright.
The fun begins this Saturday, Dec. 7, with Holiday Happenings, hosted by the Town of Bethany Beach. From 1 to 3 p.m., Bethany Beach Town Hall will be the center of holiday activity, with face painting and photos with Santa, as well as hot cocoa, cookies and a station where children can write letters to Santa.
Long-time favorites, including horse-drawn wagon rides, trolley rides through town and beach tractor rides will run until 4 p.m. The town’s beach trolley will be running to Bethany Beach Books and Grotto Pizza throughout the day. (The previously announced stop at South Coastal Library will not be active due to a scheduling conflict, according to town officials.)
The town hall is located at 214 Garfield Parkway.
At 5 p.m., the Town will hold its tree lighting on the boardwalk by the bandstand, along with caroling around the tree.
During all three Saturdays, the Elf on the Shelf Scavenger Hunt offers the chance to win prizes donated by area businesses. Prizes will be awarded to adults and children each week at 5 p.m. at the bandstand plaza. (Tip from the Elf: those who complete the two yellow bonus squares get more chances to win.)
Completed bingo cards should be dropped off at the Bethany Fine Arts Gallery,100 Garfield Parkway, by 4 p.m. each of those Saturdays to be entered into the prize drawing. Participating businesses will have bingo cards.
In addition to this Saturday’s opportunity to meet Santa at Town Hall, on Dec. 14 he will be receiving visitors at Ropewalk Bethany, 107 Garfield Parkway from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. and at Bethany Blues, 6 N. Pennsylvania Avenue, from 1 to 2 p.m. On Dec. 21, he’ll be at Bethany Beach Books, 99 Garfield Parkway, from 1 to 2 p.m.
On each of the next three Saturdays, Weekend Wonderland activities will also include $5 children’s activities at Bethany Beach Books starting at 10 a.m., $5 cookie decorating at Bethany Blues, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; and complimentary hot chocolate at 99 Sea Level restaurant on the boardwalk at Hollywood Street from 1 to 3 p.m. Winter wagon rides will also set out from near Bethany Beach Town Hall each of those days, from 1 to 4 p.m.
The celebration will also offer a chance to give back through a community coat drive and canned food collection for neighbors in need, with drop-off located at the town’s holiday tree on the boardwalk from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each of the next three Saturdays.
During the next three weekends, Lauren Weaver, director of the Bethany-Fenwick Area Chamber of Commerce said, the town will put on its best holiday sparkle for visitors and locals alike.
“We’re excited to bring people in for some tax-free shopping,” Weaver said.
In addition to downtown Bethany Beach participants, some businesses on Route 26 have joined in on the fun of the scavenger hunt this year, Weaver said.
