Addy Sea open house to benefit Freeman Stage
The Addy Sea, the historic Bethany Beach inn, will open its doors for a Holiday Open House on Wednesday, Dec. 11, from 3 to 7 p.m., with proceeds from the event benefitting the Freeman Stage.
Addy Sea innkeeper Sherene Gravatte said guests will be able to wander through the inn, which will be decorated for the holidays, and staff will be on hand to provide information on the various rooms, as well as the inn in general.
The Addy Sea was built around 1901 by John Addy, one of the founders of Bethany Beach. It remained in the Addy family until the Gravatte family purchased it in the 1970s. It is now operated as an inn, and hosts many events and weddings each year.
Gravatte said the holiday open house is one of the few public events held at the Addy Sea.
“It’s a nice opportunity for local people to see it, since they don’t stay here,” she said.
Last year was the first for the open house, which she said she and her husband, Jeff Gravatte, came up with because they wanted to give back to the Freeman Stage.
“It’s such a phenomenal thing to have so close to us,” Gravatte said of the facility located in the Bayside community west of Fenwick Island.
Guests will be able to munch on light fare provided by Sarah Garner of Swell Cakery and the inn’s executive chef, Deborah Shea, and sip on Christmas punch, Gravatte said.
Music will be provided by Cathy Jane and Taylor Knox.
In addition to the holiday decorations, Gravatte said, one room will be set up so that brides-to-be can get an idea of what an Addy Sea wedding could offer. She said she and her staff are already planning for nearly a dozen weddings in the coming year.
The Addy Sea will be closed for the season starting in January, for the inn to get its annual sprucing-up, so this will one of the last events there for the year. Each year, one part of the inn gets the particular attention of the owners, who have taken care to honor its traditions and history while adding modern amenities for the comfort of their guests.
“We don’t run the inn, the inn runs us,” joked Gravatte, who became innkeeper, along with her husband, Jeff, in 2016.
Tickets for the open house will be available at the door for $20 per person. The Addy Sea is located at 99 Ocean View Parkway in Bethany Beach.
