Norman Franklin ‘Batch’ Batchelor, 89

Norman Franklin “Batch” Batchelor, 89, passed away gently, in the care of his family, in Millsboro, Del., on Dec. 13, 2019. He was born Nov. 6, 1930, to the late William Franklin Batchelor and Maybelle Waller Batchelor in Salisbury, Md.

He married his beloved Yvonne on Oct. 10, 1954. They raised three children and shared 56 years of marriage, until her death in 2010. Batchelor lived a unique life of public service, beginning with his 40-year career with the telephone company, as it changed from Diamond State Phone Company to Bell Atlantic and to eventually to Verizon.

Batchelor served 65 years with the Millsboro (Del.) Volunteer Fire Company, serving as fire chief, as president and in various other positions there. He was also a longtime field instructor for the Delaware State Fire School and served for 40 years as parliamentarian of the Sussex County Fireman’s Association. He was appointed fire chief emeritus, in recognition of his lifelong devotion to the Millsboro Fire Company, in addition to receiving the Ned Carey Award as Fireman of the Year in 2009. Batchelor earned a Lifetime Achievement award in 2014 for his 60 years of service.

All the while, he was a devoted family man, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, serving on the Vestry and the Men’s Club.

Batchelor was preceded in death by his siblings, Richard Batchelor, G. Neal Batchelor and Cornelia Batchelor. He is survived by his daughters, Betsy B. Bradley of Millsboro, Del., Norma B. Bergey and her husband, Curtis R. Bergey, of Suffolk, Va., and Teresa Osborn and her husband, Lon M. Osborn, of Houston, Texas; four grandchildren, William R. Bergey and his wife, Christina, Kristina Bergey and her husband, Derek Hunt, Megan Saunder and her husband, Christopher, and Elizabeth Carpenter and her husband, Brandon; three beautiful great-grandchildren, Amelia Bergey, Emily Saunders and Isabelle Bergey; his sisters-in-law, Katharine B. Allen of Mardela Springs, Md., Joan Batchelor of Georgetown, Del., and Kay Batchelor of Millsboro; his “adopted family,” Lori Bergey, Linda Johnson and Mike Mitchell; several nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members; his fire colleagues; and many hundreds of lives he touched through his service and sacrifice.

A special fire department procession with police escort will be held at noon on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2019, originating at Watson Funeral Home, to carry him to Station 83 on his beloved REO antique fire truck. The funeral service, celebration of life and fire department honors will begin at 3 p.m., with visitation for family and friends starting at 1 p.m., at Station 83 of the Millsboro Volunteer Fire Company, 109 E. State Street, Millsboro, Del. Fire Chaplain Robert Hudson will officiate. Private interment will be held at a later date.
