Sylvester G. ‘Pop’ Quillen Sr., 86
Sylvester G. “Pop” Quillen Sr., 86, of Ocean View, Del., passed away and went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Dec. 6, 2019, while surrounded by his loving family in the comfort of his home.
Quillen was born in Frankford, Del., on June 6, 1933, son of the late Eldon Henry Quillen and the late Marie Elizabeth (Furman) Quillen. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955, during the Korean War.
He retired in 1991 from work as a custodian for the Indian River School District, with more than 26 years of service. He was also the owner and operator of Quillen’s Repair Shop for 37 years. He had a heart of gold and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Quillen loved to cut grass, put puzzles together and listening to country music and the Grand Ole Opry. His love and devotion to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren will be cherished by his family.
In addition to his parents, Quillen was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte L. Quillen; a son, Sylvester G. “Chuck” Quillen Jr; and a brother, Charles Quillen. He is survived by his daughter-in-law, Gail Quillen; two sisters, Daisy Williams and Jeanette Fry; a brother, Brice Quillen; a grandson, Sylvester G. “Bud” Quillen III; a granddaughter, Jenna Quillen; and three great-grandchildren, Kylee and Steven Reynolds, and Zachary Quillen.
A viewing will begin at 11 a.m., with funeral service at noon, on Friday, Dec. 13, 2019, at Melson Funeral Services, 38040 Muddy Neck Road, Ocean View, Del. Interment will follow at St. George’s Cemetery in Clarksville, Del.
