Dewey Goes Pink 2019 total reaches $166,000
The annual October event Dewey Goes Pink consists of a 5K run, walk and “pink party” with live entertainment. The annual fall event is held in Dewey Beach, yet draws in thousands of participants from all over Delaware, as well as the tri-state area.

In October of 2019, the event hosted 3,300 participants. Steve “Monty” Montgomery of The Starboard and Adam Howard of the Body Shop launched the fundraising event nine years ago, and the event and support has continued to grow ever since. In December 2019, DBCC staff met Montgomery and Howard for the traditional check presentation at The Starboard.

“Adam Howard of Rehoboth’s Body shop and I started this event nine years ago to honor his mother, who was then battling breast cancer, and in memory of my own mom, who had lost her fight after 25 amazing years,” said Montgomery.

“Quickly we saw how special the event became to so many in and around our area who are affected by breast cancer, whether themselves or a loved one. We wanted to create a day for everyone to be together with their family or friends, to celebrate with them in a town known for celebrating at a place like The Starboard, which is so famous for fun times.

“It could not have grown into a better event,” he added. “We cherish this day each year and thank everyone for their contributions, which all stay local and go directly to the DBCC to aid their efforts in helping those right here in Sussex County, Del., for those who are dealing with the nastiness of breast cancer.

“I am very sorry to report that Adam’s mom Paula Howard recently lost her fight, making this coming year’s 10th anniversary even more personal and special for Adam and his family,” Montgomery noted. “We will surely do something special next year for Paula Howard, as she was so proud of the efforts Adam put forth in helping create Dewey Goes Pink and the results it has brought to our local Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition.”

Through those efforts, Montgomery and Howard have helped raise $650,000 for the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition (DBCC) over the last nine years. The support from the community helped the 2019 event become the largest fundraising year yet, totaling $166,000.

Dewey Goes Pink 2020 will take place on Saturday, Oct. 3. Sponsorships help support the event, along with creation of teams to participate in fundraising and the 5K or walk. Teams of all sizes are welcome, many of which create unique costumes and themes to compete for the various prizes.

Registration will open for the 10th Annual Dewey Goes Pink on Aug. 1 at midnight, and this year’s event will cap at 3,000 attendees. The event will take place Saturday, Oct. 3, at 11 a.m. at The Starboard in Dewey Beach. This past year they surprised attendees with a 10-plane flyover. As they begin to plan the 10th annual event, ideas are in progress to continue with fun surprises. Visit www.deweygoespink.com to learn more.
